As a reminder of its heritage, the ruins of Restormel Castle overlook Lostwithiel. The castle was acquired in 1265 by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, second son of King John and brother to Henry III. The acquisition from the de Cardinan family included the Borough of Lostwithiel in addition to the town and port of Fowey. Edward, the Black Prince made several visits to the castle and for a short time made his home there. Eventually the castle fell into disrepair, and by the time of the Civil War it had been abandoned. Restormel Castle was captured on 21 August 1644 by Sir Richard Grenville and the Parliamentarians garrisoned the Keep. After this event the castle was left to fall into decay. The English Heritage now oversees the ruins which are open to the public.
